On Aug. 6 2007, Wal-Mart officially entered into a 50:50 joint venture with Bharti Enterprises (of Bharti Airtel fame). The company will be called Bharti Wal-Mart Private Limited. According to this post on the labnol.org site, the company will focus on the wholesale and logistical aspects of the business while Bharti Retail will handle the retail operations. The local kirana stores are in for some serious competition now – though, according to the post, Bharti Wal-Mart will sell to the kirana stores too. Sounds like a Sam’s club style operation to me. It’ll be interesting to see how this model develops in India.
